arc of the moral universe
![]()
the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice dr. martain luther king jr. please watch this ! it's just a couple of minutes, the music is the love theme from bladerunner by vengelis dick morrisey is the saxophonist. you may find yourself watching it many times... it is truly compelling
i usually put to it at the end of my work day. it's a great way to unwind and begin "happy hour" very uplifting
who wouldn't love to see eddie murphy as the rev m. l. k. directed by ron howard? perhaps one day soon...here's that last part of his speech.... we have put it into text so that people around the world can use the google translator to understand what the reverend is saying.....
(last paragraph) >> I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, (Yes, sir) however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, (No sir) because "truth crushed to earth will rise again." (Yes, sir) How long? Not long, (Yes, sir) because "no lie can live forever." (Yes, sir) How long? Not long, (All right. How long) because "you shall reap what you sow." (Yes, sir) How long? (How long?) Not long: (Not long) Truth forever on the scaffold, (Speak) Wrong forever on the throne, (Yes, sir) Yet that scaffold sways the future, (Yes, sir) And, behind the dim unknown,Standeth God within the shadow, Keeping watch above his own. How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. (Yes, sir)How long? Not long, (Not long) because:Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; (Yes, sir)He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; (Yes)He has loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword; (Yes, sir)His truth is marching on. (Yes, sir) He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; (Speak, sir)He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat. (That’s right) O, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on. (Yeah) Glory, hallelujah! (Yes, sir) Glory, hallelujah! (All right) Glory, hallelujah! Glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. (Applause)the video clip of martin luther kings speech in montgomery will be our front page, it's been there for coming up on a year. we have adopted it as a theme that is very close to our heart.
dr. king's "how long, not long" is one of the greatest speeches in the history of everything.
we are dedicated to the pursuance of excellence, in terms of race, and in terms of equality. we have come a long way in a short time, but we have a lot more to do. we will feature other great speeches and video, maybe even on the front page from time to time. but for now this is what we like best.
dr. king did more to help the cause, than anyone in america's history, along with a few others like abraham lincoln and frederick douglas and a few noteable others, we celebrate his life everyday at washington america, we wish that he was here now.

this will be one of the great challenges of all time for america and the gulf region... two thoughts come to mind: first is when saddam set fires to the well while leaving kuwait, they said it might take years to get under control, and it didn't; second; oh my god chernobyl. has there been a cover up, to hide the magnitude of the disaster? i don't think much of "keeping our boot on the throat of B P", it's not very friendly when you consider our great relationship with britain. economically?, i think most people wouldn't mind paying a v.a.t. or value added tax, if they could be sure that it would help these fine southern folks that keep getting pounded by disaster.
there is a lot going on right now, with politics, arizona, the gulf spill, and now the attempted bombing in n.y.c., this is when we need to be most vigilant, and situationally aware of our friends and neighbors. and don't even crack a complaint if you are rolling heavy with the big suv. we are all guilty, and dependent on those oil rigs in the gulf and wherever else. until we look at cutting energy usage, we are all guilty. and don't miss the analogy of oil rig fires and national debt. our common goal is to put both fires out. use less oil, and stop spending and wasting money... are we dedicated to both? finally, there is an obvious technology gap in managing spills. eleven guys died.
it's dangerous work. there were safety devices in place that did not deploy. we move forward. if there is no evidence of gross negligence, then we all share the blame. we can't damn or judge the people that bring us the oil. this event will trigger a new look at super spill safety. we should approach energy demands from scaling back usage, instead of from the global warming perspective. this is a big thing and it's going to put alot of people to work, so there is one good thing. if bush were still president the democrats would be saying "bush caused the horizon oil rig catastrophe and spill to take the attention away from arizona".![]()
once again we are reminded how much we depend on our fine military. thanks to each and every one of you, in every branch, serving our great nation, around the world....

when the wheels fall off, we'll let you know... are you better off than you were two years ago ? that's the question that will most freak out the piper and his flock. the piper's calling you to join him.
we are not here just to criticize the president and the government. so for now we are overlooking this thing whereby the pres seems to be campaigning to specific groups of voters. (people of colour and women) this is a pretty big thing if it continues. it kind of goes along with mr. obama not being able to transcend to the office of president. we hope that the president doesn't work the presidency the way he did as senator running for president. what we need from our leader is less campaigning and more leading![]()
the spill in the gulf is epic, on so many levels. we hope the best possible people are working on it, the recovery time will be long. the economic impact, again happening to an all ready hard hit zone. it seems as if louisiana can't catch a break. and it's not just louisiana, the whole gulf may be affected, many lives will be changed. if god is listening, please leave these poor folks alone. this disaster does fall into the federal government's arena, and will give our federal government a chance to really shine.

the presidential leadership skills are spilling over to the streets of arizona. the truth is, is that there would be a "showdown no matter what". also driving this mix is the states taking control of their own matters. we have been saying all along that the supremes will have more states vs. fed cases than ever. they know, and are beginning to repair to that. imigration is the new healthcare

the worst economy since the great depression. was during the carter administration. unemployment topped out at 9 % the prime rate went to 21.5 % inflation 19% highest income tax rate was 70% there was gas rationing and malaise. there were runs on banks during the great depression.. today we have the f d i c so all of your deposits are safe. the government can print money and raise your taxes. there is more technology in america than before. so that's why we are pulling for the two year term limit for president obama until sarah palin takes over, then make it ten years.
we would much rather see mr. obama be a mediocre one term president, than be elected again....there probably won't be any VAT (value added tax).... cha. deficit reduction is code for higher taxes. spend and collect, collect then waste, the bigger the budget the higher the taxes. first they soften you up with "it's not as toxic as it used to be". american spending will tank when families hibernate from spending. inflation next, then another great depression ?

we have to thank senator schumer once again
by kandis kane
he just keeps handing us the most wonderful fodder. his latest thing was again to comment on the airlines, yes even after calling a stewardess a "bitch" because she asked him to comply to airline safety rules. but get this, with respect to charging people for carryon bags. it was a marketing strategy, whereby the fare was cut and the flying bottom line cost was less. then good ole charlie onetake couldn't walk by the camera and said, (are you ready for this?) "we don't want this practice to spread to the other airlines like a disease"... oh my god... if this isn't right out of atlas shrugged. then the ceo of spirit airlines said, "i don't even know why the government is involved".thank you senator, you have just clearly indicated that certain marketing campaigns, or any business practices will be considered intolerable in your all controlling government, metropolis perhaps. drink your coolade while we look after the farm. boy is chucky s. going to hate us before it's all over, congress asshole of the year ? guess it depends on how many first class plane rides he takes on the taxpayer dime. any day that starts with "schumer and the airlines" will be a good one for us.

been to a t-party lately ? there may be one coming to a harbor near you. when people like bill clinton come out and specifically comment on the other side's politics, you know that they are worried. this is real, although the dems are still trying to downplay and diminish it's very existence.
as we move closer to the election, we will see more and more desperate attempts. the problem is, (and what the definition of is, is) is that some of the protesters were some of their own people. as the obama whitehouse spins more and more out of control, you will see more governing according to what will get him re-elected. he says i am not concerned about being re-elected... yeah right... we'll see. we don't think that this president has the necessary skills to unite the nation (the great uniter). hmmm it's not the principle, it's the money

right.....our two presidents by jacob broom one as the leader of the country, and the other, an arrogant condescending partisan liberal and average comedian. mr. president, did you say people with opposing views need rush limbaugh to tell us what to think? mr. limbaugh speaks the truth. and is usually a week or two ahead of everybody else. and rush has an integrity that you may never know. your classless comedy routines have all the other presidents rolling in their graves (metaphorically of course for the living ones). ok... in this era of "the party of hypocrisy" you have used your last insult grace, and no more mulligans chief, time to stop blaming everybody for everything bad, and taking the credit when things go well. you think that if we don't cozy up to your communistic nationalizing of our fundamental ideals, as laid out by the groundwork of the first congress, then we are misguided, and mentally weak? you want to start the campaign today, fine, consider it started. you want to repeatedly belittle half the country, your country? you say let's work together, but when you get in front of "your crowd", you insult the hell out of us?
once you become president you are supposed to rise above petty politics. the line is drawn. go ahead be smug. "let them eat cake" while you live the party highlife on america's tab is so wrong. you may be president, but you will never be a rockstar, because you never learned to play an instrument. and guess what? more kids today would still rather be a rockstar than be president (we love that). the game is on . you once had, then lost our support. we gave you every benefit of doubt in learning the job. so, what are we going to do? we're starting with a list of your abandoned promises. you think you are better than we are? so be it. (although you do have that cool jet with monogrammed ashtrays). use the next three years well amigo. oneterm... we'll see how it goes... let's roll the dice now, you speak with forked tongue. you are the "i'll say anything to stay popular" president. your star is fading so early in the night sky. how do you like us now?. we'll help you to find your way off the stage. what will you do for work in three years? i think acorn may be hiring down the street at the community organizing plant. americans are angry now![]()
poor richard's almanac for the twenty-first century.......... .......... and the third millenniumwe need real technology.... controlling the weather. too much co2
Only about 0.03 percent of the Earth's atmosphere consists of carbon dioxide (plants need co2 to produce o2) (nitrogen, oxygen, and argon constitute about 78 percent, 20 percent, and 0.93 percent of the atmosphere, respectively) that's a real measurable empirical fact... not like the stupid made up claims in your stupid movie. even the term "greenhouse effect" is wrong... the term implies that like a greenhouse there is a solid barrier (as the glass in a greenhouse).... there is no such barrier in our atmosphere... it's just space... some have enthusiastically tried to scare people to death with made up "facts" ... al gore you should give back the 1/2 billion dollars you have bilked from society... we haven't heard so much about you, since the earth has been cooling for a decade. you peddle the worst type of media demagoguery for self wealth. give the money back gore... if you really believe what you preach... you wouldn't have gotten rich from it. 95% of the earths mass is 1000 degrees centigrade. if there were such global fever, as you suggest. we could solve both the problems of global warming, and diminishing energy source by simply tapping the earth for it's heat. they already do in iceland. but people like you and michael moore stir up the public with your bullshit tinseltown movies, then you take the money and run. there is no consensus amongst the scientists that don't depend on government grant money to endlessly work on bullshit theories. they know the outcome of their experiments before they even start their research. give the money back that you so shamelessly stole. the real world needs real research done by real scientists. without a false messiah like you to sell it to the unsuspecting. real scientists, like the ones at nasa, that don't just swipe the goods. get your damn hands out of the people's scientific cookie jar. give the money back . and the worst part of all of this? at some point you discovered the truth, and you still kept peddling your made up story of the last animated polar bear falling off the last animated iceberg and swimming to his death. all for money to line your already deep pockets... how much dough do you need to be happy? asshole. you need to apologize to all of the uninformed and misled people that you cheated out of the price of your half fiction, wholly inconvenient flick. academy award? what a joke. follow the money.. mr. gore is a goliath of epic proportions.

A pamphleteer is a historical term for someone who creates or distributes pamphlets. Pamphlets were used to broadcast the writer's opinions on an issue, for example, in order to get people to vote for their favorite politician or to articulate a particular political ideology.
![]()
A famous pamphleteer of the American Revolutionary War was Thomas Paine. Another famous pamphleteer was Witte the With. Today a pamphleteer might communicate his missives by way of weblog, but before the advent of telecommunications, those with access to a printing press and a supply of paper used the pamphlet as a means of mass communications outside of newspapers or full-fledged books
the "reverend al" cornera race baiting hypocrite crackpot that has done little to help, but lots to inflame race relations in this country.... we so miss the glory days of martin luther king... dr. king was a man of great integrity.. thoughtfulness and sincerity... the reverend al is an ignorant, arrogant blowhard......... dr. king was one of the greatest speakers in history and a class act.... the "reverend" al is a hack.. nice going asshole
there's gold in them thar hills!! it seems as if every other ad on tv is about buying and keeping gold as an investment.... well first of all... it's the people who trade the stuff that are making the money. second ... gold is pretty neat... it does provide some enjoyment... it's heavy, and it's gold colored. buying gold is not necessarily a bad idea... we hope that everyone is smart enough not to by a peice of paper that says you own gold somewhere.... the price of gold varies from year to year.... the people who bought it for 35 dollars per ounce before 1972... are the smartest gold investers.... but think about this.... if the shit goes down and the country turns into thunderdome... all of the gold in the world.... won't by you a pound of food. if you want to invest in something both useful and enjoyable... buy a nice peice of land and packets of seeds for growing... then you will be popular with your friends, and you'll be safe from just about any changes that our government might bring about.. and better have a gun to protect your gold.... in this new era of gold fever.

our mission statement the primary objective for the washingtonamerica is to have fun. don't take everything that you may find here too seriously. this is all just fun with political philosophy and falderal. we do address serious subjects, and since we believe in our county and our founding fathers concepts, we do take that subject very seriously. however, we have no deadlines and you won't see any dates or reference to time (other than posting of current content), thereby creating a sort of loose current events chronology, a sort of "pop historical political record". we are not compelled to "get something out there" on time, so we can never be late. "because we're in a hurry" is not a good motivation for thoughtful commentary and perspective. we will try to keep it nice, with some dignity and class and emphasis on the positive. we will try not to attack people personally. that's not always easy, but we'll try. if something here is wrong, we will change it asap. there are certain words that you will not see here, we think we all know what they all are. other than that. there are no rules. and as always, it don't cost nothin'... so enjoy! thank you! the editors@washingtonamerica.com
steve wynn for president.!! steve wynn was a part of a panel disscussion on one of the newshows... wow! he speaks like one of the original founding fathers, it's all about jobs. and real ones, created by free enterprise, not government made up ones. go man! you are a true american success story. we would vote for you anytime!

look... why can't
we just be happy for president obama for having been awarded the nobel prize. he didn't ask for it, and it seems to us that, this could be a great rallying point, and a chance for everyone , to put petty politics aside,... and to get behind our leader. he was truly humbled and self effacing in his acceptance,,,,,,,, and that was nice. no one knows what it's like to be president, until they're in. no one is a more staunch, and dyed in the wool new england democratic republican than i. i don't agree with just about everything president obama stands for,. however, we as a counrty elected him. we chose him and we're stuck.... he got himself elected, and just like every other election in u.s. history, that, in itself deserves a nobel prize. america has done more for the advancement of peace in the history of the world. we love peace. and we want everyone to have it. peace is freedom. freedom means peace. if you except that the nobel prize is not a confirmation of a lifetime achievement, rather, an acknowledgement of a work in progress. if you think about it, probably it embellishes the concilliatory tone that president obama has put forth to date, and creates a special hope for what is to come. the nature of the honor has changed, and doesn't it make anything but sense, for it to be given contemporarily. awards posthumously given, or delivered at the end of a career, are a waste in the sense of a recipient not knowing about it and enjoying it's effect, while still on god's green earth. someone out there is paying attention, and wants to pay tribute to a new american president. there is no doubt that this prize arrives with a world political agenda.... but so what, it's positive, and it's nice. people are taking it way too seriously. one thing i noticed... is that nobel is close to the word noble....so the name has developed a chache of aristocrisy. it's a prize, that's all. will it affect the way he governs? of course not, will it change the way the world looks at the usa? probably a little, and that's fine. it's time for us to stand with and encourage our president obama. there will be plenty of time to scrutinize, criticize and mortalise, but for now, let's just be happy for him. don't go out of your way to diminish this presidency, ask what you can do to as an american, to support his efforts of now. wherever you are politically, he is our president and we shall treat him..... and the office with dignity, respect, and kindness. he has a most difficult bunch of tasks ahead. we should all be happy to be a part of a solution for his success. one nation, one heart. be happy for the president. oh, and it's ok to go on mocking the congress. they deserve it.
g.w. and the freemasons![]()
![]()
freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that arose from obscure origins in the late 16th to early 17th century. Freemasonry now exists in various forms all over the world, with a membership estimated at around 5 million, including just under two million in the United States and around 480,000 in England, Scotland and Ireland.[1][2] The various forms all share moral and metaphysical ideals, which include, in most cases, a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.[3]
The fraternity is administratively organised into Grand Lodges (or sometimes Orients), each of which governs its own jurisdiction, which consists of subordinate (or constituent) Lodges. Grand Lodges recognise each other through a process of landmarks and regularity. There are also appendant bodies, which are organisations related to the main branch of Freemasonry, but with their own independent administration.
Freemasonry uses the metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey what has been described by both Masons and critics as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."[4][5]

it was a good year! for the americans listen. this country is fine. we're in good shape. we always have been in terms of funtionality....don't let whatever government is in power tell you that the united states is on the brink of disaster. or depression. it's all bullshit and they do it so they can save us all. the economy is ok... it just cycles... that's all. they tell us that we are in a state of complete ruin so they can say that they fixed it in just six months or a year no less...it's all crap... they're already running for the next term. wouldn't the economy and the state of the nation have to be solid to keep coming back? the government has never made the economy better... it just happens. because we have talent and resources and the hard work of each american that shows up for work everyday the depression of 2009?. not going to happen.... never was..... we as american's work very extra hard to share our freedom with the world.if you want it. it is at our very door.....we live in a a great era, and in wonderfully magic land. if we believe in each other, and ourselves we are going to be fine... so stop worrying. everything is going to be ok.this is when we tighten our belts that;s all. washingtonamerica has found it's voice.... we have fun...but there is a time to stand up. to take notice. and to be serious. and defeat the enemy. for us right now.... the enemy is. 9/11/2001. the enemy is the definition of what's keeping our loved ones away from homeland. in the name of civilised world defense. it is the great interuptor of our strongest beliefs. it is the very essense of why we get up in the morning and say. "this is the day that makes life better. not just for us" so give us your tired your poor and your hungry.. those words mean more to america now than ever before ..... do we have problems? sure we do, but there is oppurtunity here.... for those who are willing to take a chance on themseleves. for generations..... they come to america in search of a better life. and ... they will come here evermore.

our president obama deserves a lot of credit and praise for not playing the race card. he could have, many times, but he didn't, and we respect that. he has transcended color barriers so well, that he makes people forget about it. he has and carries forth universal appeal. it seems to me that this has never really been done before. since i am such a martin luther king fan, and i do think that he was one of the greatest, not just speakers, but leaders of men and women. president obama has many of those qualities. is he the real thing like dr. king or abe lincoln?

Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state, giving aid to enemies, or levying war against one's state. Sedition laws somewhat equate to terrorism and public order laws
how does living in the usa today compare to the times of the revolutionary war. what were the political philosophies driving society then, and the motives of today. does the political party system of now accuratly portray the sentiments of the people? is there more class division? what about taxation without representation? are the fundemental liberties the same, or have they become diluted over the generations. these ideals are fun to explore.

why does the whitehouse always have steak dinners when someone important comes to town. that's all we have heard about. the president of "whatevercountrystan", was honored at white house dinner, or they crashed the white house steak dinner. why couldn't they serve fish or chicken once in a while, why do they always have a steak dinner. it just doesn't seem right.Civic virtue
civic virtues are personal habits and attitudes that are conducive to social harmony and group well-being. The identification of the character traits that constitute civic virtue has been a major concern of political philosophy. The term civility refers to behavior between persons and groups that conforms to a social mode (that is, in accordance with the civil society), as itself being a foundational principle of society and law. Generally, civility is a social virtue that involves self-control or moderation and contrasts with pride, insolence, and arrogance.

Pfizer’s abandonment of its plans for New London render moot the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on eminent domain in Kelo v. New London. In the case, the city of New London had sought “eminent domain” power to seize the houses of several people living in a run-down neighborhood. The land was to be transformed into Pfizer’s new facility. The city argued it needed to bulldoze blighted areas in order to redevelop them. Susette Kelo argued the government should not have the right to take her home. the supreme court is tantamount to moot. can you imagine? they really screwed america and the constitution with this one. and no one can say we're picking political sides here, because it was the so called "conservatives" that did the screwing... have the supremes learned anything by this? probably notthis is the famous house once "owned" by suzzette kelo, after 5 members of the supreme court made it possible for the city of new london connecticut to steal, then give to private developers. pfizer corp was at the center of the frenzy, but is now pulling out of new london because of growing financial problems. like the new york times headquarters, it stands as testimony to the erosion of our constitution. the house itself was dismantled and moved across town. (more about the gutting of the fifth amendment on our "conservative by nature" page)In all honesty, I’m not happy about what happened to me,” Ms. Kelo said. But, she added, “With 43 states changing their laws, in that sense I feel we did some good for people across the country.”
the fact that 43 states changed their eminent domain laws is testament to the fact that the states still hold some power, but is it enough to keep "the people" in control of their country?
we hold the power if you read the paragraphs below, you can get a sense that since we as a nation use so much energy from oil, that we also hold the key for demand, and therefore the price. if we could collectively scale back our demand, on a national level, we would cause the price to drop. this is the new era of another look at coal and natural gas, while we develop new and efficient alternative sources
televsion news people are really annoying when they ask the interviewee a question, and then cut them off. well that's all the time we have now. you know, work it out, don't be rude, if you are up against "a hard break", deal with it. don't be rude. don't ask the first question, then halfway thru the first answer say "well, i'm afraid we're short on time congressman" don't be rude
Oil Consumption in North America
Oil Consumption in North AmericaCurrently, the United States consumes 19.6 million barrels per day, of oil, which is more than 25% of the world's total.. As a result, the U.S produces one fourth of the world's carbon emissions. Despite predictions that the U.S. will exhaust it's supply of oil in as little as forty years, the demand is on the increase, and is predicted to continue increasing, because of the ever increasing population. Increase in resource consumption is caused by three factors: population growth, new uses found for a resource, and increase in demand for a resource to increase living standards. The rate of consumption for oil is increasing at a rate of about 2% yearly.
U.S. Oil Production
The United States produced enough oil to supply it's own demand until 1970, (Youngquist paragraph 6). In that year the U.S. had to start importing oil to meet the demand. The oil production for 2000 is expected to average 5.8 million barrels per day of crude oil. The production for 1999 was 5.9 million barrels per day. After the oil price collapse of 1985/1986, U.S. oil production declined dramatically. Oil production in 2000 is down by 24% from 1985. However, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), oil production is expected to increase by 70,000 barrels per day, or 1.1% in 2001. There is little to no chance of discovering any significant new onshore oil fields in the U.S. There is a good possibility of discovering major deposits of oil offshore, but offshore drilling has been banned in many areas. There are several good prospects far offshore that are open to exploration, but these are usually in very deep waters, and are extremely expensive to drill. The U.S. produces 12% of the world's oil, and and this production is concentrated onshore, and offshore along the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast, extending inland through west Texas, Oklahoma, and eastern Kansas. There are also significant oil fields in Alaska along the central North Slope.
Oil Reserves
According to the EIA, the United States has 21 billion barrels of proved oil reserves as of January 1, 2000. The U.S. uses about 6.6 billion barrels per year. That is only enough oil to last the U.S. about three and a half years without importing oil from other countries. 84% of the reserves are concentrated in four states. Texas has 25%, both onshore, and offshore. Alaska has 24%, California has 21%, and Louisiana has 14% onshore, and offshore. Since 1990, U.S. oil reserves have dropped about 20%. New oil discoveries made in 1999 were made almost entirely in the Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska. (321 million barrels). All other discoveries were extensions of existing oil fields, or new reservoirs discovered in old fields. (404 million barrels).
Importing
The demand for oil in the United States is increasing slightly every year but domestic oil production is decreasing. The U.S. is expected to consume an average of 19.6 million barrels per day of oil in 2000. It is estimated that the U.S. imported 10.9 million barrels per day of oil in the first eight months of 2000, (E.I.A. Paragraph 9). At this rate, the U.S. is currently importing about 57% of the oil that is being consumed. The main suppliers of oil to the U.S. at this time are; Canada (1.68 million barrels per day), Saudi Arabia (1.49 million barrels per day), Venezuela (1.46 million barrels per day), and Mexico (1.35 million barrels per day). The U.S. has energy sanctions against Iran, Iraq, and Libya, all major oil producers, that prohibit U.S. companies from doing business with them.
Misconceptions about Fossil Fuel Resources
With few exceptions, 16,000 feet is the maximum depth at which oil is found. Below that depth, only gas exists, because of the temperature of the earth. The United States has large areas of oil shale deposits, which are sometimes misconstrued as being a readily available resource. However, oil shale deposits are not the same thing as conventional oil fields. There are no effective methods for extracting crude oil, from oil shale. A variety of processes have been tried, and all have failed. Oilsands, which is another kind of oil deposit, are found in large quantities in Canada. It has been estimated that the oilsands contain 1.7 trillion barrels of oil, but this oil cannot be recovered by standard methods of well drilling, and has to be strip mined. After it is dug up, the oil is removed by a water flotation process. Then, the waste sand has to be safely disposed. The strip mining process now being used takes the energy equivalent of two barrels of oil to produce one barrel. In other words, the price to produce it is double the price for which it can be sold. Another problem with the oilsands, is that much of it is too deep to be reached by strip mining. Other methods of removing the deeper oil are being experimented with, but they are all very costly. Canada's oilsands will probably not be produced in large amounts until the world's supply of conventional oil is nearly depleted.
Conclusion
If the natural resources of the world continue to be exploited at such a staggering rate, there will be nothing left to exploit. Conservation strategies have been implemented, especially at times when an energy shortage has occurred, but these strategies are all but forgotten when the shortage passes. Unfortunately, conserving resources at this point will only temporarily postpone the inevitable, which is total energy resource exhaustion. Unless the lifestyles, and transportation habits, of the ever-increasing population that demand more, and more resources are dramatically changed, or new energy sources are discovered, conserving won't save us.
